Haines Shore Excursion Reviews

Karen Knowlton

If you like a quiet port, away from crowds, Haines is it. It’s walkable, but built on a slope, so those with mobility concerns, heart problems or breathing difficulties may want to take a shore excursion in a vehicle. For the rest of us, it’s good exercise. There are a lot of artist’s galleries in town, offering jewelry as well as native-style art. The main square in town is the open field in the center of what once was Ft. Seward, a US Army post, the surrounding buildings being mostly remnants of officers’ and enlisted men’s housing, etc.

My favorite aspect of Haines is the remarkable scenery, as the little town along the Lynn Canal has the stupendous backdrop of the Chilkat Mountains. I can’t render it into words, but as we approached Haines, I thought it was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen!
