William Freeman On our visit to Juneau, we took two ship-sponsored tours, one to the Mendenhall Glacier and the other to the “Salmon Bake”. All the other reviewers have well described the glacier. We got the usual “You should have been here yesterday to see the bears eating salmon out of the river” routine. The salmon bake was just outside town and although it seemed to be in the shadow of the hospital for Juneau (I think), it was nevertheless so sheltered in thick forest that it seemed to be way out in the bush. The salmon bake consisted of barbecued salmon, some side dishes, ribs and your choice of beverage and dessert, plus some live entertainment from a great group of female singers doing Alaskan songs. They were so good we bought their tape. The food was great, and after eating we had time top explore the local area, including a short walk up a trail alongside a creek teeming with salmon up to a beautiful waterfall. There’s a little gift shop and all sorts of old farming or mining gear to look at. Our bus driver kept promising to tell us all the interesting stories of his “people”, the Tlinglits, but got so enmeshed in complaining about how bad the Indians are treated that he never got around to the folk tales- seemed to be a really angry fellow. Worth every dime.
